Orania’s Population Today

Orania has close to 3,000 residents. The town council counts everyone each December: 3,025 people at the end of 2024, the first time the town passed 3,000, and 2,903 at the end of 2025. The number of households kept growing, from 1,236 to 1,266, because more students now live in Orania in smaller households. Over the last five years the town has grown by 5.1% a year on average.

A Brief History of the Town’s Growth

Orania was purchased in 1990 by a group of Afrikaner families who wanted to establish a self-governing Afrikaans cultural community. The town was built on the site of a former government construction camp that had been used during the building of the Vanderkloof Dam. In the early 1990s, only a few dozen families called it home.

By 2000, the population had grown to a few hundred. The 2011 national census counted 892 people in Orania. The growth accelerated significantly from 2015 onwards as South Africa’s economic challenges led more Afrikaners to consider a self-reliant community lifestyle.

Growth Rate and Future Projections

From 2,377 residents in 2021 to 2,903 in 2025, Orania has grown by about 5% a year. This is extraordinary compared to national trends where most rural towns are shrinking. Town planners have set a long-term target of 10,000 residents, a goal that Orania’s leadership believes is achievable within the next two decades.

New residential developments, schools, and commercial infrastructure are being added to accommodate this growth. The town has its own bakery, supermarket, pharmacy, fuel station, restaurant, museum, and a growing number of small businesses.

Who Lives in Orania?

The community is made up predominantly of Afrikaans-speaking residents who subscribe to the values of cultural self-determination and community development. Residents come from across South Africa, with a significant number relocating from Gauteng, the Western Cape, and the Free State.

The town also has a young population profile. Several hundred children attend the local school, which offers education from Grade 1 through Grade 12. Orania has its own matriculants every year and consistently produces strong academic results.

Seasonal and Tourist Population

In addition to its permanent residents, Orania receives a growing number of visitors throughout the year. Tourism has become an increasingly important part of the local economy, with guests coming from across South Africa and internationally to experience the town’s unique culture, the Orange River, and the surrounding Northern Cape landscape.
