Why the Northern Cape Deserves a Road Trip

South Africa's Northern Cape is the country's largest province and one of its least visited. This is precisely what makes it special. Vast distances between towns give way to a landscape of extraordinary emptiness and beauty. The Karoo stretches in every direction, the skies are enormous, and the Orange River cuts a green ribbon through the dry plains.

For travellers willing to drive the extra kilometres, the rewards include some of South Africa's most dramatic scenery, genuinely unique cultural experiences, and almost no crowds at any time of year.

Day 1: Johannesburg or Cape Town to Kimberley

Kimberley is the ideal starting point for a Northern Cape road trip. From Johannesburg, the drive takes approximately 5 hours on the N12. From Cape Town, it is roughly 8 hours on the N1 and N12.

Kimberley is famous for the Big Hole, the largest hand-dug excavation in the world created during the 19th-century diamond rush. The museum surrounding the Big Hole is well worth a half-day visit. Stay overnight at one of Kimberley's hotels or guesthouses.

Day 2: Kimberley to Orania via Hopetown

The route south from Kimberley toward Orania passes through Douglas and then follows the N8 west. A worthwhile stop along the way is Hopetown, a small town on the banks of the Orange River famous for being the site where South Africa's first diamond was discovered in 1867. A small memorial marks the spot.

From Hopetown, follow the R369 south to reach Orania. The total driving time from Kimberley to Orania is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours.

Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring Orania. Visit the museum, walk along the river, and settle into your accommodation at Wilger Rus.

Day 3: Orania and the Orange River

Dedicate a full day to the Orange River. This is one of the highlights of the entire trip. Options for the day include:

    • Early morning bird watching along the riverbanks
    • Fishing for yellowfish, carp, and barbel
    • Swimming in the calm sections of the river near the huts
    • Exploring Orania town, including the Koeksister Monument and the Language Centre
    • A late afternoon braai beside the water as the sun sets over the Karoo

Day 4: Orania to Prieska and the Gariep Loop

From Orania, take the road west toward Prieska, a small mining town on the Orange River known for its beautiful river bends. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours and passes through some magnificent Karoo scenery.

Return via the R369 toward Hanover, a historic Karoo village with beautifully preserved Victorian architecture and excellent sheep's milk cheese available from local farms.

Day 5: Return via the Karoo

Head back toward your departure city. If returning to Cape Town, the route via Three Sisters and Worcester offers stunning mountain passes. If returning to Johannesburg, consider stopping at the Gariep Dam, the largest dam in South Africa, on the Orange River near Noupoort.

    • The Northern Cape roads are quiet but wide and well-maintained
    • Summer temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Travel with extra water
