Koeksister Monument

Erected in 2003, the Koeksister Monument is one of Orania's most unique and beloved landmarks. This approximately 2-meter polystyrene sculpture celebrates the generations of Afrikaner women who baked and sold koeksisters (a traditional syrupy sweet pastry) to raise funds for orphanages, churches, schools, and community projects. The monument was created by the Kaalvoet Women's Organisation, named after Voortrekker Susanna Smit who famously said she would rather walk barefoot over the Drakensberg than live under British rule. The koeksister also became a symbol of reconciliation when Nelson Mandela traveled to Orania in 1995 to have afternoon tea with Mrs. Betsie Verwoerd. Located near Orania's swimming pool, the monument represents self-sufficiency, community spirit, and the enduring traditions of Afrikaner culture.
