Discover the unique monuments and artworks of Orania
Orania's Koeksister Monument began as a tongue-in-cheek project, but carries a very serious message. The monument is not just for the sweet treat so characteristic of Afrikaners, but also honors the Afrikaner woman and the funds raised over the years for building churches or schools by baking koeksisters at bazaars.
The Orania Monument Hill or heroes' garden honors statesmen from Afrikaner history, featuring one of the most beautiful views in Orania. The semicircle of busts, with the Klein Reus (Little Giant) in front in the middle, symbolizes not only our rich past behind us, but that freedom through own labor awaits us in the future.
💡 Visits during sunrise or sunset are especially recommended
During the Anglo-Boer War, Irish volunteers came to assist the Boers in the struggle against colonial England. The Irish Monument was unveiled in 1976 in Brixton, Johannesburg, where it was demolished in 2002 to make way for commercial development. The Freedom Front Plus and Orania worked together to give it a new home in Orania.
The Barefoot Women of Orania (referring to the Voortrekker women who were prepared to go "barefoot over the Drakensberg") tackle various projects to beautify Orania. The Barefoot Stairs connecting two parts of Orania is an example of such a project. The stairs are decorated with mosaic tiles to create a symbolic image depicting Orania residents' dependence on our Creator, the agricultural sector, seasons and the environment.
Another beautiful artwork by Cornelia Holm adorns the wall at Karoosig Retreat. The Song Wall depicts various well-known Afrikaans folk songs. This artwork was made with a technique called sgraffito, which ensures a long lifespan.
This monument standing in front of Die Duiker depicts Orania's cycling culture. Cyclists and walkers who have just climbed the Barefoot Stairs and also viewed the Song Wall will find this monument further along their route.
Walk through the halls of Afrikaner history
Walk through the halls of Afrikaner history. The Orania Cultural-Historical Museum offers an experience from Jan van Riebeeck's arrival at the Cape through the Great Trek, Boer Republics, freedom wars and concentration camps to the Border War, Rebellion, Republic and Union formation.
After Mrs. Betsie Verwoerd's death in 2000, her former residence was converted into the Orania Verwoerd Museum. Part of the house is preserved just as it looked in her lifetime, while the other half includes museum pieces from their time in government service.
