Beelde Koppie (Monument Hill)

Beelde Koppie (also called Monumentkoppie or Monument Hill) is one of Orania's most significant landmarks, offering both historical interest and spectacular views. At the forefront stands the iconic "Klein Reus" (Little Giant) statue - a young boy rolling up his sleeves, which has become Orania's official symbol representing self-reliance through work. Behind it, a semi-circle of plinths displays busts of historical Afrikaner leaders including Paul Kruger and others. The Irish Brigade Monument, erected by the Irish Brigade Memorial Fund, honors the 300 Irish who fought for the Boer nation during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). The four cylinders represent the Irish battalions, with the tallest (3.5m) representing the rising of the Afrikaner nation. Visit at sunset for breathtaking views over Orania and the Orange River - it's one of the most photographed spots in town.
